Thousands Left Without Power

Around 3,000 homes and businesses are without power following a night of extreme weather.

Strong winds battered many parts of the country, with the southwest, west and northwest hit worst.

Engineers are working to reconnect power but are understood to be hampered by the ongoing weather conditions.

Homes Left Without Power After 100MPH Winds
Some 11,000 homes are without power after over 100mph winds raged overnight in Ireland. North Western counties were worst hit, with Eircom claiming they had almost 5,000 reported faults on their system.

ESB Crews Continuing To Deal With Faults
ESB Networks are continuing to work on repairing and restoring electricity networks damaged by bad weather overnight. According to ESB the number of customers without power has been reduced from some 10,000 to around 4,000 and crews are continuing to deal with faults.

Over 13,000 Without Electricity
So far around 13,000 people have been left without power as strong winds sweep across the country. The tail end of Hurricane Katia’s destruction has left Cavan, Longford, Mayo, Sligo and Donegal the worst hit by power outages. 2,000 customers in Dublin are also without power due to a failure in Coolmine.

€70m Announced For Storm Damage
The Government has announced €70 million will be made available for a programme of repair and remediation works. This will enable local authorities in the areas worst affected by the storms, including the most recent flooding, to help affected communities by restoring roads, coastal protection and other infrastructure and amenities.

Consider Nuclear Power, Says Expert
Depletion of oil and gas reserves, concerns about energy security and the environmental threat of greenhouse gases means Ireland must consider nuclear power. That's according to Dr Bertrand Barré, Scientific Advisor to the French energy company, Areva Group.
