Three Arrested Following Prisoner Escape
Three people have been arrested in connection with the escape of a prisoner from Tallaght Hospital last month.
Derek Brockwell, 53, escaped from Tallaght Hospital on 17 February after being escorted there from Portlaoise Prison for a hospital visit. Two prison officers who had accompanied him to the hospital were attacked by Brockwell – one of whom suffered a serious stab wound to the stomach.
Brockwell fled the hospital and was picked up by an awaiting accomplice on a motorbike.
Following a nationwide hunt, he was recaptured the following day in Belfast after he was spotted standing outside a pub having a drink. Just prior to this, Brockwell was suspected to have robbed two shops nearby.
He remains in police custody.
On Tuesday, gardaí confirmed they have now made three arrests in connection with Brockwell's escape. A man and woman, both aged in their early 60s, were arrested in Co Meath, while a man in his 30s was arrested in Portlaoise.
All three have been detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at Tallaght and Rathfarnham Garda Stations.
