Funding Announced For Local Festivals

More than €550,000 has been set aside for a number of local festivals and events throughout Ireland this year.

The funding, announced by Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring TD, will see 187 local events benefit from a share of €564,000 from Fáilte Ireland.

Each event will receive an average grant of €3,000, and follows previous announcements that almost €2.3m had been earmarked for 27 large festivals throughout Ireland in 2015.

The festivals being supported by Fáilte Ireland under the Regional Programme of the Festivals and Events Initiative include 105 festivals to boost tourism activity along the Wild Atlantic Way, while assistance will be given to a diverse and exciting collection of 54 festivals throughout the rest of the country. In addition, 28 local events in Dublin – city and county – will be supported.

Welcoming the investment, Minister Ring said: "The funding announced today will allow local communities to broaden their appeal to overseas visitors who will be able to experience everything from culture and sport, to festivals and fun. These events are the lifeblood of tourism for many local communities and give tourists compelling reasons to explore rural Ireland."

Shaun Quinn, CEO of Fáilte Ireland, added: "Festivals and events complement the beauty of our landscapes and the friendliness of our people with a rich variety of spectacle and experiences.

"These events will provide the backbone to the tourism calendar in communities throughout the country and add to our ability to grow overseas visitors and revenue."
