Record Number Of CAO Applications Received
More than 74,000 applications have been received by the Central Applications Office (CAO) ahead of this year's initial deadline.
A total of 74,424 applications were received, an increase of almost 1,333 from the previous year.
Numbers increased for courses in business, construction, engineering and technology, while first preference numbers for architecture increased by 15%. This follows a similar rise from the previous year. Engineering and technology increase by 9%. Students deciding to select law as their first choice course surged by 12%, while general arts and science degrees fell by around 3%.
The number of those selecting medicine also continued to fall, while less than 18% are choosing agricultural and horticultural courses as their first choice.

Call For Students To Submit Grant Funding Applications As Deadline Nears
Students are being urged to submit their grant funding applications before the deadline on Friday, 08 July. Fine Gael Senator, Jerry Buttimer, confirmed the SUSI has received 70,000 applications for the 2016/2017 academic year. He said: "SUSI are expecting to receive about 110,000 applications for the 2016/2017 academic year.

With almost 100,000 new passport applications in the first seven weeks of 2013 more than 130 new temporary clerical officers will be recruited to cope with the demand. It is known the highest demand for passports happens between April and July, with almost 50 per cent of applications received.

Significant Rise In Science And Tech Course Applications
The last five years have seen a seen a significant increase in the number of application to study science, technology and engineering at third level. The Higher Education Authority, which analysed CAO preferences, also found that technology courses make up one fifth of all first preference applications this year.

2,300 Citizens Received Consular Assistance In 2015
More than 2,300 Irish citizens received consular assistance from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in 2015, it has been revealed. The assistance includes support to the families of Irish citizens who passed away while abroad last year. 263 people passed away abroad in 2015.
