Govt Considering Legislation To Take Water Charge From Wages

The government is considering introducing legislation to allow for the recovery of unpaid water charges directly from people's wages.

It is understood that the legislation would seek to make a distinction between those who cannot pay and those who will not pay.

For those who cannot pay, they would seek to make an arrangement to recoup the money over a longer period.

Speaking on RTÉ's Claire Byrne Live, Minister for the Environment, Alan Kelly, would not confirm or deny the move.

"I'm not going to pour cold water on it for the simple reason that is this, from an equity and a fairness point of view, you know we've 66-67% of people who have signed up and that needs to be respected," Minister Kelly said.
