94% Of Irish Waters Meet Tougher EU Standards

Only 6% of Ireland's public bathing waters have failed to pass new stricter water quality standards, introduced by the European Union.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) carries out yearly tests on water identified by local authorities as widely used by the public for bathing.

Three quarters of the 136 beaches and bathing areas tested were rated excellent, while seven areas failed to meet the minimum standards.

It was found that Ardmore Strand in Waterford, Ballyloughane and Clifden in Galway, Duncannon Strand in Wexford, Lilliput on Lough Ennel in Westmeath, the South Beachat Rush in Co Dublin, and the Front Strand at Youghal in Cork failed due to the impact of waste water discharges.

The new EU standards in 2015 are twice as strict as previous years.

The full list of results can be found on the EPA 'Splash' website.
