Teenager Dies In River Shannon

A 14-year-old boy has died after getting into difficulty in the River Shannon, Co Westmeath.

It is understood the boy was swimming in the river on Wednesday near to the Athlone Sub Aqua clubhouse when he got into difficulty.

He is believed to have been recovered from the water after a 15 minute search and taken to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe.

He was later transferred to Temple Street Children’' University Hospital, Dublin. He was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

River Water Quality Is Deteriorating - EPA
River water quality is deteriorating, according to findings from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA has published the Water Quality in Ireland Report for the period 2013-2018. 92% of groundwater bodies, 80% of coastal waters, 53% of rivers, 50% of lakes and 38% of estuaries were found to be of satisfactory quality.

Fisherman's Body Identified
The body of a fisherman, found off the south Co Wexford coast, has been identified. John Ennis went missing 31 days ago after the boat he was in sank 45 metres from shore between Duncannon and Arthurstown.

7-Year-Old Dies After River Fall
A 7-year-old boy has died after falling into a river near his home in Midleton, Co Cork on Sunday. It is understood that the boy was playing with friends near his home in Tir Cluain when he fell into the Owenacurra River around19:00. Two neighbours pulled the child from the water about 250 metres from where he went in.

Boy And Girl Drown In Irish Rivers
A teenage girl and young boy have died in separate drowning accidents. In Co Down, ten-year-old Daniel Andre died in hospital after pulled from the River Bann. It is understood that he was in the river with friends at Hilltown, near Rathfriland, when he got into difficulties shortly before 5pm yesterday.

Two Swimmers Die After Getting Into Difficulty In Co Kerry
Two women have died in hospital after getting into difficulty while swimming. A lifeguard called emergency services after the women, understood to be aged in their 60s and 70s, got into difficulty while swimming at Inch strand, Co Kerry. The women were airlifted to Kerry General Hospital but were pronounced dead a short time later.
