Hundreds Attend Berkeley Vigil For Irish Students

Hundreds of people attended a candlelit vigil in Berkeley, California, to pay their respects after six people died when a balcony collapsed.

Five Irish students died in the incident, with seven more remaining in hospital – two of which are said to be in a serious condition.

The vigil gathered in the Martin luther King Civic Center Park near to the apartment block where the incident happened according to a report by RTÉ.

The government has been urged to fund better mental health services for students following a survey that revealed one third of college students are experiencing anxiety and mental health issues. The Union of Students of Ireland report found that 38% of students experienced severe levels of anxiety.

Vigil For Homeless Man Cancelled
A vigil for a homeless man who died while sleeping on the streets of Dublin last week has been cancelled following revelations that he was on the sex offenders' register. Campaigners Home Sweet Home cancelled the vigil for Stephen 'Jack' Watson which was to be held outside Apollo House on Thursday, 07 September.
