People Aged 70 And Over To Receive Free GP Care

All people aged 70 and over are to receive free GP care from today, 05 August.

This is the second phase of universal GP care extends a GP service without charges to everyone aged 70 years and older.

The new measure applies to those aged 70 and over who do not currently hold a medical or GP visit card.

Minister Varadkar said: "All 400,000 people aged 70 and over will be able to see their GP without paying fees. It's an important step because, for the first time, the eldest and youngest in our society will be able to access GP care without being charged."

A HSE public information campaign on the new service is also starting which is aimed at encouraging just under 40,000 people aged 70 years or older, who do not already have a medical card or GP visit card to register for this service.

Almost 70,000 carers are due to receive the Respite Care Grant, the majority of them this week. The annual grant of €1,700 is available to all carers providing full-time care and attention to an older person or a person with a disability, regardless of their means or social insurance contributions.

Man Being Question Over Dublin Death
A man is still being questioned in connection with the death of a 46-year-old woman in Dublin on Tuesday. The mother of three was found with stab wounds at a house in La Verna Dale in Castlerock in west Dublin yesterday morning and she was admitted to hospital where she later died. The woman had three children aged nine, six and three-years-old.

'Urgent Need' For Professional Home Care Service
There is an "urgent need" to develop a professional home care service to Ireland's ageing population, Fine Gael has said. The party's Seanad spokesperson on Health, Colm Burke, said that the number of people aged over 65 is expected to double over the next 20 years, increasing from its present level of 585,000 to over one million.
