Sinn Féin President Asked To 'Clarify His Position' Amid PIRA News

Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams has been urged to "clarify his position" amid news in Northern Ireland that the Provisional IRA has been linked to a recent murder.

Making the call, Labour TD Eric Burn said: "Nearly 20 years since the Provisional IRA called a ceasefire, there is strong evidence emerging from the North today that not only is the organisation still active, but responsible for the ruthless murder of Kevin McGuigan recently.

"This is a frightening vista which has the potential to unravel the Irish peace process. Already we can see that it is destabilising matters in Stormont, a fragile operation at best.

"As President of Sinn Fein, Gerry Adams must immediately clarify his position on the situation and state if he is aware of any recent revival in PIRA activities, at a command level or otherwise.

"Adams' close links to PIRA in the past are well-documented so it is unfathomable that he would be in the dark on this issue. Any resumption in the activities of this terrorist organisation is a dangerous development for peace in Ireland and Adams needs to clarify his position out of duty to the future stability of North-South relations."
