Community Hospital In Dublin Officially Opens
The Mount Carmel Community Hospital in Dublin has officially opened.
The HSE purchased Mount Carmel in August 2014 at a capital cost of €11m. The facility has since been redeveloped to support both the Acute Hospitals and Community Services in Dublin providing a range of Short Stay Community Beds, including Step Down/Step Up Beds, Assessment Beds, Transitional Care Beds and Rehabilitation Beds.
Following essential building works on site, Mount Carmel Community Hospital opened on a phased basis in April 2015. The full complement of 65 beds have been open since the end of June for people who, in the opinion of the Discharge Team/Consultant in the Acute Hospitals, will benefit from intermediate care or support for an agreed period of time and who have completed their Acute phase of care in the Acute hospital.
Pat Healy, HSE National Director of Social Care, said: "Mount Carmel Community Hospital is an example of the work that has been undertaken by the Social Care Division of the HSE.
"It recognises, not only the requirement for additional capacity, but the need to develop a sustainable model of care for older people, of which the provision of short stay services through rehabilitation respite and transition is an important component.
"We must continue to support older people to live in their own homes and communty for as long as possible and help them regain and retain their indepenence.
"By providing the type of support that can be demonstrated in Mount Carmel this type of model of service becomes a reality for older people."
