Minister Congratulates Junior Cert Students

The Minister for Education & Skills has congratulated the 59,522 students who will receive their Junior Certificate results today.

Minister Jan O'Sullivan said: "I want to congratulate all those who are receiving their Junior Certificate exams results today. I hope that your results reflect the hard work you have put into your studies and give you a solid foundation to continue your studies in the coming years.

"I would like to acknowledge the work of the teachers in preparing their students over the three year cycle and also acknowledge the key role that parents and the wider family play in supporting the students."

The numbers taking the optional Irish has risen from 339 in 2007 to 16,529 this year. Also, the numbers sitting the optional oral in other languages, such as Spanish and Italian have also increased.

Ministers Congratulates Students Receiving Junior Cert Results
The Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairí Quinn TD, congratulated the 59,823 young people and those returning to education who are receiving their Junior Certificate results today. This is the highest number of students to sit the exams in recent years and is an increase of 1.7% on last year's number.

Concern Over Maths Leaving Cert Results
This years Leaving Cert results are in, but for many math students, the day will be tainted as high failure rates in the subject have become the main talking point. Some 4,300 students failed the maths exam, while failure rates in science subjects at both higher and ordinary level were far higher than in other subjects.

Food Boxes Provided For Students Still Waiting For Grants
Students' Unions across the country are providing boxes of food for students who are still waiting on grant assistance. The Union of Students in Ireland (USI) has encouraged all Students' Unions to provide whatever assistance they can to those who are now looking to them for their basic needs.
