Cigarettes And Cash Seized In Limerick
Ten thousand cigarettes and almost €7,000 in cash have been seized by Revenue Officers during a planned vehicle search in Limerick.
The 'M&J' cigarettes and cash were discovered when a car was stopped and searched by officers in Limerick city. The cash was detained in accordance with the proceeds of crime legislation and a three month detention order was granted at Limerick District Court to facilitate further investigations.
An Irish national in his sixties was questioned and a file is being prepared for the DPP.
The seizure is part of Revenue's ongoing operations targeting the supply and sale of illegal cigarettes in the shadow economy. More than 18,000 cigarettes have been seized by Revenue officers in two separate operations in Limerick and Dublin. The smuggled cigarettes are understood to have originated in Bulgaria and Ukraine and were detected by Revenue Officers in Athlone and Portlaoise Mail Centres.

Revenue Officers in Cork have seized 25,000 cigarettes following a search operation at a house in Macroom. The cigarettes, branded 'Marlboro', 'L&M', 'Mayfair' and 'Che', have a retail value in excess of €13,000, representing a loss of around €10,400 to the Exchequer.
