Flood Relief Scheme Announced Under New EU Regulations
Flood relief work has been announced for the Clare River, the first scheme to be confirmed under new EU regulations.
Under the regulations, there is now a requirement for an independent assessment of the Environmental Impact Statement prepared for the scheme.
Announcing the scheme, the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Brendan Howlin, said: "I am very much aware of the potential impact of flooding on communities and the Government has provided significant investment of €430 million in the Capital InvestmentPlanover the 2016-2021 period for flood mitigation initiatives to protect threatened localities from river and coastal flood risk. This Scheme will provide flood protection for properties which flooded in 2009 and will also provide flood protection for properties which are currently at risk from flooding."

Making the call, Fianna Fáil TD for Galway East, Anne Rabbitte, has also called on the acting Minister for Flood Relief to introduce long promised flood defence measures in the county, as well as requesting emergency roads funding.
