Debate On 20-Year Strategy For Irish Language Announced

An open policy debate is to be held into the 20-Year Strategy for the Irish Language, Minister of State for Gaeltacht Affairs, Joe McHugh has said.

The Minister of State said: "The aim of the open policy debate on the Strategy is to look back at what has been achieved under the Strategy over the past five years and to look ahead at priorities under the Strategy over the next five years.

"The open policy debate will result in the main strategic priorities for the five year period from 2016 being identified and published."

The following events will be held as part of the open policy debate:

• Gaeltacht meetings that will focus in particular on the practical implementation of the language planning process under the Gaeltacht Act 2012. The Gaeltacht meetings will be held in Indreabhán, Co. Galway (Tuesday, 24 November), Killarney, Co. Kerry (Thursday, 26 November) and Gaoth Dobhair, Co. Donegal (Tuesday, 1 December).

• A conference in Dublin (Wednesday, 9 December) focusing on the Strategy's specified areas for action, particularly education, the Gaeltacht, the family, public services, the media and technology.

As part of the open policy debate, a discussion paper has been published on the website of the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. The Department is inviting submissions on the discussion paper by 18 December.
