Fianna Fáil Raise Concerns Over Care Standards In Hospitals

Dignity and basic care standards should be a priority for hospital management, Fianna Fáil spokesperson on health, Billy Kelleher, has said.

Deputy Kelleher made the comments following the latest independent report into the care of an 81-year-old man at Beaumont Hospital last December.

"This report should be mandatory reading for hospital management to ensure that the necessary supports, resources and training are provided to all health service staff working in acute and non-acute settings," Deputy Kelleher said.

"Caring for patients is the most basic requirement for healthcare providers, particularly those working with the elderly. There can be no complacency, but unfortunately we are seeing too many complaints from patients and their relatives relating to basic care standards.

"I welcome the fact that Beaumont Hospital has apologised to the Feeney family. It's the least that can be done in light of the situation. All hospital managers should read and carefully consider the contents of this report so that care standards across the country are improved and maintained."
