Taoiseach To Attend British Irish Council Summit

The Taoiseach Enda Kenny is to attend the British Irish Council (BIC) meeting in London hosted by Secretary of State, Theresa Villiers.

The meeting will be attended by Northern Ireland's First Minister, Peter Robinson and deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness, the Chief Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, and representatives from all other Member Administrations.

The British Irish Council, established under 1998 Multi-Party Agreement, continues to play a unique and important role in furthering, promoting and developing links between its Member Administrations through positive, practical relationships. The London Summit will be the twenty fifth to be held since the inaugural meeting of the BIC in 1999.

The Council is likely to discuss the Stormont House Agreement & Implementation Plan 'A Fresh Start' and the effects of the conflict in Syria and the refugee situation in Europe and the Middle East. They will also consider the work taking place across the 12 British-Irish Council worksectors, with a focus on the Environment worksector who will present a collaborative paper on Natural Capital and resources

The meeting also provides an opportunity for the Taoiseach to update Council members on Ireland's economic recovery and growth since the last summit meeting in June.

A Communiqué will issue from the BIC at the conclusion of the Summit.
