Adams Urges Govt To Access EU Funds For Flood Relief
The Irish Government is being urged by Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams to access the EU emergency fund for Storm Desmond flooding victims.
The Louth TD said making the move is the "immediate and prudent course of action to take" due to €15.6 million in cuts made to the OPW's flood risk management programme.
Recently, the Irish Government announced a €5m scheme for small businesses who have been affected by recent flooding.
However, Mr Adams said the government has been "reckless to the extreme" when it comes to flood defences.
"One would have imagined that after the devastation wrought to communities and businesses in 2014 the Government would have acted to prevent further flooding and tackle its causes," he said.
"Last night, Minister Alan Kelly remarked from the Climate Conference in Paris that 'as an island, we will have issues in the future unless this is dealt with'. Yet there is no plan for flooding or climate change and this government has cut €15.6 million in flood relief.
"Sinn Féin believes that accessing EU Solidarity Fund is an immediate and prudent course of action given the needs of communities and businesses."
Deputy Adams continued: "The EU Solidarity Fund can provide financial aid to Member States in the event of a major natural disaster, particularly in the event of an extraordinary regional disaster that affects the majority of the population of a region with serious and lasting repercussions on its economic stability and living conditions.
"It is clear that the flooding will have a major impact on the economy and lives of effected communities."
