Bishop John McAreavey To Begin Ten-Day Middle Eastern Visit
Irish Bishop John McAreavey is due to begin a ten-day trip to visit Christians in the Middle East, it has been announced.
Bishop John McAreavey will be accompanied by bishops from Europe, South Africa and North America while visiting Christian communities in Gaza and Bethlehem, as well as refugees in Jordan.
The delegation will visit the Christian community in Gaza, as well as celebrating Mass at the parish of the Holy Family, meeting with parishioners, visiting the school of the Holy Rosary Sisters and participating in various projects.
The community in Gaza comprises of roughly 2,500 people, of whom Catholics number approximately 200.
The event marks the delegations third consecutive visit to the region, during which time the conflict of 2014 has led to the deaths of over two thousand Gazans, including over five hundred children, with one third of the population being internally displaced
The delegation will then return to Bethlehem and celebrate Mass and visit the Christian community of Beit Jala.
A further focus of their visit will be Jordan and the refugees who have been forced out of their homes as a result of the ongoing conflict in Syria and Iraq.
The delegation will arrive in Jordan on 10 January and leave on 14 January.

The latest Central Statistics Office (CSO) figures released today show that the number of overseas visits to Ireland for the 1st quarter of 2017 was 1.796 million, which was an increase of 0.6% compared to the same quarter in 2016.

Bishop Asks Priests For €1K Towards Compensation
The Bishop of Ferns has gone to the parish priests, asking them to contribute €1,000 each to pay the outstanding bill for abuse compensation. Bishop of Ferns Dr Denis Brennan made the request in a letter to members of the clergy writing that "the consensus at the Deanery meetings was that €1,000 per priest per year would meet our present needs".

Former Christian Brother Found Guilty Of Sexual Abuse
A former Christian Brother has been found guilty at Galway Crown Court on six charges of indecent assault. A jury returned a unanimous verdict on six counts for the sexual abuse of a young boy at St Joseph's Industrial School in Letterfrack during the 1960s.
