Failure To Establish Flood Risk Agency Leaves Ireland 'Vulnerable' - Carthy

The failure to establish an agency to manage flood risk will leave parts of Ireland 'vulnerable' to further floods, according to Sinn Féin MEP Matt Carthy.

Mr Carthy made his comments after a yellow warning was issued for Cork and Kerry as up to 40mm of rain is expected to fall.

He added a long term flood defence plan 'must be a priority' for the next incoming government.

"Unfortunately the scenes we have witnessed of homes and businesses being destroyed in recent weeks have become something we are beginning to get used to," Mr Carthy said.

"In December my party leader Gerry Adams TD proposed the establishment of a single agency to lead and coordinate flood risk management. He has again written to the Taoiseach Enda Kenny TD urge him to give this proposal serious consideration.

"The reality is that the government's failure to establish such an agency will leave many parts of the state vulnerable to further floods."

The Midlands North West representative also urged the government to apply for EU Solidarity funding to help lessen the costs of restoration and flood prevention works in the future.
