INMO Holds Meeting Ahead Of Planned Strike Action
The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) has held a national meeting to discuss the organisation's planned strike action next week.
At the discussion, INMO Emergency Department (ED) Representatives were instructed to continue with industrial action at seven hospitals next Thursday, 14 January.
The hospitals involved include:
• Beaumont Hospital, Dublin.
• Mercy University Hospital, Cork.
• Tallaght Hospital, Dublin.
• Cavan General Hospital.
• Midland Regional Hospital, Tullamore.
• University Hospital Galway.
• University Hospital, Waterford.
The organisation was also directed to hold further discussion with health employers over staff concerns of overcrowding in ED's and patient safety issues.
It is understood staff have also lost confidence in senior management's ability to implement the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) brokered agreement.
INMO General Secretary Liam Doran said that the meeting was "strong, committed and absolutely determined" to address issues held by staff in ED's.
"It is quite clear that health employers will have to make a monumental effort, commencing this weekend, to begin convincing frontline nursing staff, in emergency departments, that the WRC proposals will be implemented and will make a real difference to patient care and safe nursing practice."
Speaking at the BT Young Scientist Awards on Thursday, Health Minister Leo Varadkar said that the HSE and the Department of Health would do "everything they could" to avert the strike.
It is understood talks between the INMO, the HSE and the Department of Health are expected to begin over the weekend.
