Minister For Foreign Affairs Expresses Condolences Over Passing Of Boutros Boutros-Ghali
The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Charlie Flanagan, has expressed his condolences following the passing of Boutros Boutros-Ghali, former Secretary-General of the United Nations.
Minister Flanagan said: "I was saddened to learn today of the passing of Boutros Boutros-Ghali and wish to express my condolences to his family and friends.
"Boutros Boutros-Ghali, the first Arab to be appointed as Secretary-General of the United Nations, held the position from 1992 to 1996. Under his leadership, the UN faced unprecedented crises including in Somalia, Rwanda, the Middle East and the former Yugoslavia. He took on these significant challenges tirelessly, while also seeking to introduce reforms at the UN.
"Throughout his career, Mr Boutros-Ghali was a powerful advocate for democracy and human rights, values which must remain at the forefront of the United Nations' response to today's crises.
"My thoughts are with his family and friends today as they mourn their loss."

New Cyclist Safety Legislation Announced
New legislation is to be introduced to try and reduce the number of cycling fatalities on Irish roads. The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Shane Ross, has announced that he will legislate for Minimum Passing Distance (MPD).

Work To Begin On Ballaghaderreen Bypass
Transport Minister Leo Varadkar will turn the sod on the Ballaghaderreen bypass on the Mayo-Roscommon border at 3pm today. Work will officially begin on the project on the N5 as soon as the sod turning ceremony is finished. The bypass is to cost approximately €60m.

"Christy was a true pioneer for golf in Ireland and one of our finest sportsmen. He was a major influence on so many golfers and was the corner stone on which Ireland's impact on modern golf was built," Minister Ross said.

United Legends Win Penalty Shootout In Liam Miller Tribute Match
The Manchester United Legends team have beaten a combined Celtic/Republic of Ireland side in tribute match to the late Liam Miller. The United Legends were victorious in a penalty shootout when the score finished 2-2 after 90 minutes. The match took place in Liam's hometown of Cork at GAA stadium Pairc Ui Chaoimh.
