Recounts Underway Following General Election

A number of recounts and rechecks are underway following the completion of the official count of votes in Friday's General Election.

The count at 35 of 40 constituencies are understood to have been completed, with 148 of the 158 Dáil filled.

However, final results are not yet know as recounts have been ordered in Dublin Bay North, Wexford and Dublin South West and Longford-Westmeath.

From the initial results it is understood that the Fine Gael and Labour coalition will not return to power, but no single party holds enough of the votes to govern alone.

Talks between parties about potential new coalitions are expected to begin within weeks. However, if no agreement is reached another General Election could be called.
