DCC To Build 131 Modular Housing Units By Autumn
Dublin City Council (DCC) has revealed a modular housing project for homeless people is to be completed this autumn.
Around 131 Rapid Build Housing Units are to be developed on sites in Drimnagh, Ballyfermot and Belcamp at the beginning of April.
A further site in Finglas is scheduled to begin construction in July.
A tender competition for the project was initiated today, 02 March, after a previous tender was cancelled due to a low number of applications.
Recent figures have revealed were 769 families in emergency homeless accommodation in January.
In addition, 125 new families became homeless during the same month.
Pat Doyle CEO of Peter McVerry Trust, said the increase was "very concerning".
"To go from 41 families in December to 125 in January is an enormous jump and one that lays bare the growing problem of homelessness in Ireland," he said.
"Once the next Government is formed we need to see a high level response led by the next Taoiseach to dealing with the homeless emergency we need all relevant Government departments working with frontline agencies to tackle the issue."
