Election Result Signals 'Death Knell' For Water Charges - McDonald

Over 400,000 people who voted for Right2Change candidates signals the "death knell" for domestic water charges, according to Sinn Féin deputy leader Mary Lou McDonald.

Ms McDonald said the fact that so many of the electorate voted for candidates against the levy in the general election brings the issue of water charges "front and centre".

Speaking outside Leinster House this morning, 02 March, Deputy McDonald said: "Sinn Féin, along with other parties and independents, stood in this election on a platform to abolish water charges. Over 400,000 people voted for candidates aligned to the Right2Change platform to end water charges.

"This signals the death knell of domestic water charges as the electorate has punished those who would see them inflicted on already pressured Irish families.

"The Fine Gael/Labour Government has been comprehensively booted out of office and domestic water charges must follow."
