ASTI Announce Escalation Of Industrial Action

The Association of Secondary Teachers Of Ireland (ASTI) has announced that it plans to escalate industrial action if Junior Cycle dispute not resolved.

ASTI said that it was planning a series of strike days to take place from this autumn if the dispute is not resolved.

The second level teachers' union is currently engaging in industrial action, including non-attendance at training for the new Junior Cycle. ASTI members rejected the proposed new Junior Cycle in a ballot of its members in September 2015.

The union has stated that there is a window of opportunity for the next Minister for Education to resolve teachers' outstanding concerns before the 2016/17 school year.

The ASTI says outstanding concerns include the lack of an externally assessed oral exam in modern languages and Gaeilge and increased workload and bureaucracy for teachers.
