Govt Urged To Issue Preservation Order For Moore Street

The government has been urged to introduce a preservation order for the entire Moore Street National Monument.

Sinn Féin TD Aengus Ó Snodaigh made the call following a High Court ruling that the monument exceeds the government's current preservation order.

Speaking at Leinster House Deputy Ó Snodaigh said: "If it wasn't for the actions of the 1916 Relatives Group the government would have allowed the destruction of our National Monument at Moore Street. In fact the government actually sided with the developers in fighting the case

"Yesterday Minister Humphreys said she would not rule out appealing the High Court ruling. That shows the contempt in which this government holds our history and our culture particularly as we are on the eve of the centenary of the rising.

"Sinn Féin is now calling on the government to introduce a preservation order for the entire Moore Street National Monument as designated by the High Court last week.

"This should include No 10 Moore Street; number 12 Moore Street; number 13 Moore Street, numbers 18, 20 and 21 Moore Street; what was once O'Brien's water works; the old O'Brien's bottling stores; the onetime O'Brien's stables - the so-called White House; O'Rahilly Parade; Moore Lane from Parnell Street to Henry Place; the entire 'L' of Henry Place; and Moore Street from the junction with Henry Place to the junction with O'Rahilly Parade.

"This has all been designated a National Monument and there is an onus on the government to protect it on behalf of the Irish people.  That means introducing a preservation order immediately."
