Former INMO President Calls On Future Govt To Prioritise Healthcare

Former Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) President, Madeline Spiers, has called on the future government to make investment in primary healthcare a priority.

Ms Spiers made the call after INMO published a UCD study of Missed Care in Community Services in Ireland.

The report revealed there is limited access to comprehensive care for the majority of the population, while the health service is 'barely coping' to meet its statutory function.

Ms Spiers added the study shows only 5% of the nursing workforce are engaged in community health services, compared with 15% and 14.5% in the UK.

INMO General Secretary Liam Doran said: "The results of this study again reinforce the need for sustained investment in our public health service.  The lack of proper funding has severely hindered nurses and midwives in the delivery of care as is evidenced in the study.

"A fit for purpose primary care service is an essential component of any health service and it is vital that investment is made now and into the future to ensure that a world class service can be delivered to all those who need it."
