Sinn Féin Will Not Take Part In Dáil Proceedings - Adams
Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams has announced the party will not take part in Dáil proceedings today, 06 April.
The Dáil is meeting for the third time since the general election in February, with the last meeting taking place on 10 March.
However, a vote for Taoiseach is likely to prove inconclusive.
Mr Adams has now revealed he will not allow his name to go forward for the position, describing today's events as a "charade".
Speaking at Leinster House, Mr Adams said: "I welcome the news that Enda Kenny, the leader of Fine Gael and Micheál Martin the leader of Fianna Fáil are to meet. It is a matter of some concern that it has taken them so long to do this.
"It is also a matter of grave concern that the business of the Dáil has been effectively suspended. We are meeting today apparently to have a vote for a Taoiseach which will be totally inconclusive. It is a waste of time and a continuation of the charade. Sinn Fein will take no part in this charade.
"Enda Kenny cannot be elected for Taoiseach today. Neither can Micheál Martin and neither could I. For that reason I am not allowing my name to go forward. Enda Kenny and Micheál Martin should do likewise."
