Minister Lynch Welcomes NDA Report On HIQA Inspections

Minister of State Kathleen Lynch has welcomed a report on HIQA inspections in residential centres.

The National Disability Authority (NDA) report highlighted a number of key findings, such as a higher level of non-compliance being found in larger centres, while most residents would like to have an input into changes that happen in their home following a HIQA inspection.

Minister Lynch said: "In October 2014 I requested the NDA to review the experience to date of the inspection process. The NDA's review confirms the importance and necessity of the regulatory process; that it is working effectively and that it is protecting vulnerable people in the care of the State.

"The Report covers the first year of HIQA's inspections of residential services for people with disabilities.  It is clear that significant improvements have since been made across the sector. However, I note that much work remains to be carried out to ensure that all residential facilities comply with Disability Residential Standards"
