SF Table Motion To Stop Green Waste Bin Charges

Sinn Féin has tabled a motion in the Dáil aimed at stopping the imposition of green bin waste charges.

The party's Spokesperson on Communications, Natural Resources and Climate Change, Brian Stanley, said: "Green bin waste charges, facilitated by bad legislation from former Labour Minister Alan Kelly, are counterproductive, will discourage recycling of household waste and accelerate the already widespread practice of illegal dumping of rubbish. It will also disproportionately punish those on low incomes, carers and those who suffer from disability or ill health.

"From both a fairness and equality point of view and an environmental point of view, this legislation is a disaster.

"Sinn Féin has therefore tabled a motion on the Dáil order paper which would stop the imminent imposition of these charges should it receive the support of a Dáil majority.

"We are urging Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil to allow this motion to be taken and voted on at the earliest opportunity."
