Sinn Féin To Table Motion To Scrap Irish Water And End Charges
Sinn Féin is set to table a motion in the Dáil to scrap Irish Water and end domestic water charges.
The party will use Private Members time on Tuesday and Wednesday to present the motion, which has been signed by 39 anti-water charges TDs.
The motion also calls for the government to set a date for a referendum to enshrine the public ownership of water services in the Constitution of Ireland.
Speaking at the launch, Sinn Féin TD Eoin Ó Broin said: "Last February, a majority of TDs were elected on a mandate to scrap water charges.
"The overwhelming majority of people voted to scrap water charges and abolish Irish Water.
"The latest figures from Irish Water clearly demonstrate that people are opposed to paying this unfair tax.
"We expect all the TDs elected on the anti-water charges platform to vote in favour of this motion.
"We also expect the Government to respect the democratic will of the people and to scrap this charge."
Also speaking at the launch, Deputy Richard Boyd-Barrett of People before Profit added: "It is absolutely vital that we mobilise the biggest number of people this Wednesday at the Dáil to demand that those TDs who promised to abolish water charges and Irish water to keep their promise. Democracy demands it."
