Oberstown Staff Issue Notice Of Strike Action
SIPTU members at the Oberstown Detention Centre have served noticed of industrial action which is due to begin on Tuesday 31 May.
It is understood the union members are taking action over the managements "refusal to adequately address serious health and safety concerns highlighted by staff".
SIPTU Organiser, Ray Stanley, said: "Our members, along with their colleagues in IMPACT, have on numerous occasions over the last 15 months raised concerns regarding health and safety issues for staff and the young people that they care for. These include the fact that our members are at a daily risk of serious injury and assault.
"Due to management intransigence, the workers have been left with no option but to take industrial action in an attempt to have their concerns adequately addressed. Management must immediately engage with staff and their representatives with the aim of agreeing changes at the facility that will ensure that a safe environment is created for staff and the young residents."
He added: "The work stoppages between 8.00 a.m. and 12.00 p.m. will begin on Tuesday, 31 May, and continue each Tuesday throughout the month of June. It is deeply regrettable that staff have had to undertake this action. During the industrial action the staff will continue to provide the best care possible. They are also committed to ensuring that the action will not interfere with the state examinations being held at the Centre during June."

Sligo Nurses Walk Out In Strike Action
In spite of last minute negotiations, nurses at a leading hospital are today taking industrial action. Sligo General Hospital has been hit by the action as the nursing staff are staging a one-day strike. Some 240 members of the Irish Nurses Organisation and SIPTU are taking part in the day of action, which started at 8am this morning.

SIPTU Members At Tesco To Be Balloted Over Strike Action
SIPTU members at Tesco are to be balloted over proposed industrial action as a "result of the company's refusal to fully implement a Labour Court recommendation". The recommendation called for all retail staff to be awarded a 2% pay increase and a 1.5% share bonus scheme payment.

The HSE said that the disciplinary action included written warnings for some staff and pre-procedural informal counselling with training and mentoring for others.
