Two In Court Over Dublin Airport Cigarettes Seizure
Two men have appeared before Dublin Circuit Court charged in relation to the seizure of more than 30,000 cigarettes at Dublin Airport.
The men, aged 26 and 27, each pleaded guilty to an offence under section 119 of the Finance Act 2001, evasion of excise duty with intent to defraud the State.
Revenue officers found the smuggled "Marlboro Gold" cigarettes in the men's checked-in baggage, when they arrived in Dublin last Saturday. The men were arrested and, in Dublin Circuit Court on Thursday morning, Judge Smith sentenced each man to six months' imprisonment, suspended on the condition that they leave the country within 24 hours, and fined them €2,500 each.
The smuggled cigarettes have a retail value in excess of €16,000, representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of almost €13,000.
