Fianna Fáil Mark 20th Anniversary Of Murder Of Veronica Guerin
Fianna Fáil spokesperson on Justice and Equality, Jim O'Callaghan, has marked the 20th anniversary of the murder of Veronica Guerin.
"Veronica's remarkable courage & relentless determination in chronicling Ireland's underground drugs trade still resonates today, twenty years after her death. She bravely sought justice for the families & communities ravaged & left anguished by criminals," Minister O'Callaghan said.
"In 1996, there were 10,817 members of An Garda Síochána compared to the current 12,789. There were 42 murders in 1996 while in 2015 there were almost double that.
"It is appropriate for us to reflect on the characteristics of gangland activity today, which are distinctly similar to those of 1996. Murders are commonplace and committed with blatant contempt, while a major drugs crisis reemerges across the country.
"Loopholes have been found to escape the clutches of the Criminal Assets Bureau and the country's biggest drug barons now operate with impunity on the continent. More legislative effort is now required from Government to safeguard Veronica's legacy", concluded Deputy O'Callaghan.
