Ministers Congratulate Irish Soccer Team For 'Gallant Efforts' At Euro 2016
The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross, and the Minister of State for Sport and Tourism, Patrick O'Donovan, have congratulated the Ireland soccer team on their "gallant efforts" during the Euro 2016 soccer championship finals.
Minister Ross said: "I wish to whole heartedly congratulate the Irish team for their performance today and for their fine contribution in the finals of the Euro 2016 championships. Their performances on the field, under the guidance of Martin O'Neill and Roy Keane, were passionate and impressive. Today's explosive start, and Robbie Brady's early goal, kept the nation's dream alive. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be our day and the hosts march on to the quarterfinal. The behaviour of our fans, bringing fun, craic and song to France will, no doubt, encourage many French people to come to Ireland in the future. I'd like to thank our French hosts for a wonderful tournament and we in Ireland wish them every good luck for the remainder of the competition."
Minister O'Donovan added: "What a roller coaster ride we've had over the last couple of weeks. While we'll never forget our fantastic victory over Italy, we cannot be anything but proud of how our team and our fans contributed to these finals. Our soccer team can hold their heads high – they have performed excellently against many of the best teams in the world and for that we thank all of the players, the management and the back room team."
