Over 18,000 Cigarettes Seized At Dublin Airport

More than 18,000 cigarettes have been seized by revenue officers at Dublin Airport.

The contraband 'NZ' cigarettes were discovered by a detector dog in the checked-in luggage of a 42-year-old Estonian man on Tuesday.

The cigarettes have an estimated retail value of €9,700 and represent a potential loss to the Exchequer of around €7,700.

The suspect was arrested and appeared before Dublin District Court. He was remanded in custody to Cloverhill Prison until Friday, 12 August.

More than 18,000 cigarettes have been seized by Revenue officers in two separate operations in Limerick and Dublin. The smuggled cigarettes are understood to have originated in Bulgaria and Ukraine and were detected by Revenue Officers in Athlone and Portlaoise Mail Centres.

€3.1m Cigarettes Seized At Dublin Port
Customs officers at Dublin Port discovered eight million smuggled cigarettes, stored in boxes labelled “garlic and cheese tear and share”. The find was made by officers using a mobile scanner during a routine check of a refrigerated unit that had arrived at the port from Rotterdam.

Over 900,000 Cigarettes Seized In Three Customs Service Operations
Revenue's Customs Service have seized 900,000 cigarettes at Dublin Port as a result of routine profiling. On Wednesday, 12 October, the cigarettes were detected, with the help of detector dog Casey, in five pallets which were marked as 'catering equipment' and had arrived into Dublin from the Netherlands.

Illegal Cigarettes Uncovered In Co Tipperary
Some €21,000 worth of illegal cigarettes have been recovered by the Revenue Customs Service. The haul was uncovered at two premises in Roscrea, Co Tipperary, on Thursday night and represents a potential loss to the Exchequer of some €18,000. A number of people were questioned in connection with the find and a file is being prepared for the DPP.
