Irving Oil To Purchase Whitegate Refinery In Cork
Irving Oil has signed an agreement with American energy company Phillips66 to purchase the Whitegate oil refinery in Cork.
The deal has been welcomed by Sinn Féin TD for Cork East, Pat Buckley, who said the facility contributes over €100 million to the local economy.
"This is good news for the people of East Cork and Cork County as a whole," he said. "Job certainty for the 160 employees who are directly employed at the plant is of crucial importance and there are at least another 440 jobs created in the area indirectly.
"This decision will also let Ireland have some control of the pricing of our fuel which is of great importance in such a volatile industry."
Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment, Denis Naughten, added: "Security of energy supply is important to ongoing economic growth and development and a pillar of our energy policy.
"I am delighted to hear that the sale process, which started some months ago, has resulted in an agreement between Phillips66 and Irving Oil for the sale of the refinery."
