Hundreds Of Car Parking Spaces Removed From Hospital In Dublin
Nurses and other shift workers will face chaos today, 08 August, after construction work removed 300 car parking spaces at St James Hospital in Dublin.
Members of the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisations (INMO) have slammed the move and said no other alternative has been provided.
The loss of spaces is directly related to the commencement of work for the new Children's Hospital which was not expected to commence until October.
Over 100 INMO members met last Thursday and condemned the actions of management. The meeting heard how nurses working 12-hour shifts need to be assured that a safe and secure car space will be available for them. Some nurses are travelling significant distances and need car parking on site. For many, public transport is simply not feasible.
INMO Industrial Relations Officer, Clare Treacy said: "This is a total fiasco. How can this decision be considered acceptable; there was a lack of consultation with staff; a total disregard for safety of a predominately female workforce; and this is further compounded by the absence of an alternative plan to minimise disruption.
"We asked management to defer the decision for a short period of time, to allow for safe alternatives to be put in place, but no response has been received. INMO members are understandably angry and feel disrespected by their employer. Such action is likely to have serious consequences for the recruitment and retention of staff."
Members of the INMO are meeting again next week to further consider its response.
