Annual Report Of Dept Of Transport, Tourism And Sport Published
Tourism to Ireland rose by 13.7% last year according to new figures released in the Annual Report of the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport.
The Annual Report for 2015 outlines key milestones achieved by the Department last year, which included the continued growth of tourism visitors to Ireland.
The report also revealed that public transport passenger numbers also continued to increase, rising by nearly 6.5 million in the year. The Luas Cross City project progressed well and remains on target and within budget.
Welcoming the report, Minister Shane Ross, said: "I am happy to take delivery of the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport's Annual Report 2015, which outlines the progress made during the year against the Department’s objectives. I am delighted to have been appointed Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport at the beginning of May 2016 and will now commence work on preparing a new Statement of Strategy for the Department which will reflect the priorities agreed in a Programme for a Partnership Government'.
"I look forward with my colleague, Minister of State Patrick O'Donovan, TD to working with the staff of the Department to achieve these priorities during the term of this Government."

Minister Ring Opens Great Western Greenway
The Great Western Greenway has been officially opened by Minister Michael Ring T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism & Sport. The first phase of the Great Western Greenway, an 18km route off-road cycling and walking route from Newport to Mulranny, was opened in April 2010.

Galway Airport To Survive
Galway Airport looks set to survive after the Cabinet rejected a recommendation for its closure by an independent report. The airport's future became uncertain in mid-January when Minister for Transport, Noel Dempsey TD, announced the discontinuation of the Public Service Obligation (PSO) air services between Dublin and Galway.

SF Proposals On Tourism Are "Reckless And Irresponsible" - Troy
Sinn Féin's proposals for tourism in its alternative Budget 2017 are "reckless and irresponsible", according to Fianna Fáil's Spokesperson on Tourism, Robert Troy. Deputy Troy said plans by the party to increase the VAT rate on hotel beds are "dangerous" due to the "fragile state" of Ireland's tourism industry.
