Ulster Canal Advisory Forum Established

A new Ulster Canal Advisory Forum has been established to explore options for advancing the Canal Project and examine possible funding mechanisms.

The Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Heather Humphreys, and Northern Ireland's Minister for Infrastructure, Chris Hazzard, announced the establishment of the Forum, which will have regard to the review of the Ulster Canal being taken forward by the Northern Ireland Executive and the Irish Government as set out in 'A Fresh Start – The Stormont Agreement and Implementation Plan'.

The membership of the Forum will comprise of two elected members and one official from Monaghan County Council, Cavan County Council, Fermanagh and Omagh District Council as well as senior officials from the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, the Department for Infrastructure and Waterways Ireland.

Making the announcement, Minister Humphreys, said: "Having obtained Irish Government approval for the commencement of Phase 1 of the Ulster Canal restoration project from Upper Lough Erne to Castle Saunderson, I am anxious to build on this momentum and to plan for the further development of this important resource which is so critical for the border region. This Forum, which will include key stakeholders along the Ulster Canal route, will be a positive dynamic in advancing the project."

Minister Hazzard added: "I am keen that development of the Ulster Canal is undertaken in partnership with local councils and communities. By working together we can help unlock the tourism potential of the entire region and maximise all available funding opportunities. The commitment made in the Fresh Start agreement clearly signals our shared interest in moving this project forward."

New Facebook HQ Opens In Dublin
Facebook's new EMEA headquarters has been officially opened at Grand Canal Square in Dublin. Taoiseach Enda Kenny attended the ceremony and was joined by Sonia Flynn, Managing Director of Facebook Ireland. The HQ building covers around 120,000 sq ft and is situated in the capital's 'Silicon Docks' area.

Woman Stabbed In Dublin
A woman has been stabbed in Dublin City Centre. The incident happened near a hostel close to Store Street according to Gardaí. DART services have been suspended between Grand Canal Dock and Connolly as Garda investigate the incident.

Man Shot Dead In Dublin This Morning
An investigation has been launched after a 27-year-old man was shot and killed in Dublin at around 10:30 this morning. It has been reported that the shooting took place on open ground along a popular canal walkway at the junction of Suir Road and Davitt Road. The victims body was found by two woman.

Rail Services Disrupted In Flood Aftermath
Serious disruption is set to hit rail services on the southside of Dublin and further along the east coast. Irish Rail has said the severe flooding earlier this week damaged the ground around a pier at the Dodder Bridge, and it has had to close the line between Grand Canal Dock and Sydney Parade.

Dublin Theatre Rebranded In €4.3m Deal
Dublin Grand Canal Theatre, only recently opened, will be re-branded next year after signing a new sponsorship deal. The 18-month-old arts centre will be renamed the Bord Gais Energy Theatre. The energy provider will invest millions in advertising for the theatre as part of a six-year partnership.
