Decision To Cut Workplace Safety Funding 'Shocking, Short Sighted And Dangerous' - FF
A government decision to cut funding for workplace safety initiatives has been described as "shocking, short sighted and dangerous".
Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Niall Collins TD, criticised the government for its plan to cut Health and Safety Authority (HSA) funding by 47%.
Deputy Collins said: "A recent parliamentary question to the Minister confirms that the estimated spends on Safety Initiatives has been cut from €1.77 million in 2015 to €957,000 in 2016. This 47% cut makes no sense.
"What's more shocking is that the HSA has decided that a reduction in the provision for "safety initiatives" in 2016 is warranted, as per the Minister's reply, in order to fund developments including office development."
"Clearly the HSA are being forced to make business-level decisions that will affect their level of work based on below-adequate funding from the Department," added Collins.
"56 people lost their lives in 2015 as a result of workplace accidents. The best way of reducing these unnecessary losses is through educating people working in dangerous circumstances."
"The Minister must intervene, and ensure that this important service is funded adequately to meet the needs of a growing economy," concluded Collins.

The cost of repairs to roads, piers and harbours damaged by the recent severe weather has been estimated at €65m, the Government has announced. Environment Minister Phil Hogan unveiled the first estimated cost of repair at the Dáil on Thursday, adding that the worst affected areas were counties Clare and Galway.

Students are being urged to submit their grant funding applications before the deadline on Friday, 08 July. Fine Gael Senator, Jerry Buttimer, confirmed the SUSI has received 70,000 applications for the 2016/2017 academic year.
