FIFA Opens Disciplinary Proceedings Against FAI Over 1916 Logo
FIFA has started disciplinary proceedings against the FAI after the Republic of Ireland team wore a 1916 commemorative logo in a friendly match against Switzerland in March.
Irish players wore the logo with the words 'Eire 1916/Ireland 2016' during the match, which is against FIFA rules forbidding players from wearing anything that could be perceived as a political statement.
The proceedings come at a time of controversy after FIFA ruled this week that English and Scottish players cannot wear the poppy symbol during their World Cup qualifying match on Armistice Day.
In a statement, a FIFA spokesperson said: "We can confirm that disciplinary proceedings have been opened on this matter. Please understand we cannot comment further at this stage nor speculate on any outcome."
