Eight In Court Charged In Connection With Major Drugs Investigation

Eight people have appeared in court charged in connection with a major drugs investigation in Kilkenny/Carlow Division.

A total of 38 suspects have been arrested and detained as part of 'Operation Clave', which targets the sale and supply of controlled substances in Kilkenny/Carlow. In addition, 97 breaches of Section 15 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 77/84 have been detected.

During the course of various planned searches across the region, controlled drugs with a combined total of over €50,000 have been seized, as well as a firearm (air pistol), stun gun and pepper spray.

The eight suspects appeared before a special sitting of Carlow District Court at 11am today, 30 November.

A further five people, charged in connection with this investigation, have been released from custody and are due to appear before Carlow District Court at a later date.

Wharrie Loses Drug Conviction Appeal
An Englishman has lost his appeal against a conviction for his involvement in the biggest drugs haul in the history of the State. 53-year-old Perry Wharrie received a 30-year prison sentence in connection with the smuggling of €440m worth of cocaine at Dunlough Bay, Mizen Head, Co Cork on 2 July, 2007.

Six Due In Court Over Cannabis Find
A total of six men are to appear court this Thursday morning over the seizure of €200,000 worth of cannabis. The men are to appear at Sligo District Court charged with drugs and immigration offences at 10.30 a.m. A total of eight people were arrested in connection with the seizure on Tuesday.

Man In Court Over Louth Cocaine Seizure
A man has appeared in court charged in connection with a seizure of cocaine in Co. Louth. Patrick Donoghue, 54, with an address in Charleville in Dunleer, appeared before Dublin District Court charged with possession of cocaine and possession of the drug for sale or supply.

Callely Court Date Set For Next Week
The next hearing of Ivor Callely's case against the Seanad Committee over his expenses claims has been scheduled for next Tuesday. Senator Callely took the proceedings after being suspended from the Seanad by the committee for 20 days over a number of allegedly fraudulent expense claims.
