DFB Members Express "Extreme Concern" Over Lack of Aerial Appliances

SIPTU members in the Dublin Fire Brigade (DFB) have expressed "extreme concern" over the lack of aerial appliances, with only two of the vehicle mounted long ladders available for dispatch in the city and county, a third below the agreed minimum required.

SIPTU Sector Organiser, Brendan O'Brien, said: "Despite our members bringing this issue to the attention of the DFB management last month, we once again find a situation where there are today only two aerial appliances, turntable ladders, available to cover the whole city and county.

"This ongoing lack of aerial appliances is exposing our firefighter members and the public to greater risk. The issue needs to be addressed as a matter of urgency."

SIPTU said that it was calling on the relevant authorities to provide proper planning and funding to purchase new frontline and reserve aerial appliances. The current practice of purchasing second hand appliances "is just not acceptable".

SIPTU DFB Convenor, Shane McGill, concluded: "As well as raising these concerns directly with DFB management, last week we wrote to the Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government, Eoghan Murphy, outlining our concerns and highlighting the need to purchase these vehicles."
