More Than 718,000 Patients Waiting On Medical Treatment
More than 718,000 patients are waiting on medical treatment across Ireland, it has been revealed.
The National Treatment Purchase Fund (NTPF) has released new hospital waiting list figures for August, which show waiting lists increased to a record 718,165 patients for the month.
Speaking this morning, Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Louise O'Reilly TD described the situation as "out of control".
"There has hardly been a month since this government came to office where the total number of people on waiting lists has decreased," she said.
"When the current Taoiseach came to office he said he would be taking a special interest in health – this special interest has amounted to overseeing 718,000 people on hospital waiting lists.
"The situation is out of control and the Minister for Health and the government just continue to follow flawed and failed plans. We need to see sustained and intelligent investment in the public health system to tackle waiting lists. This needs to be done through the full implementation of the Sláintecare report.
"While this may be costly in the short term, it will have significant financial and health benefits for the State and for patients in the long term."
