Over 590 Hospital Patients Waiting For A Bed - INMO

Over 590 admitted patients are waiting for a hospital bed, according to new figures.

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) said 433 of these are waiting in the emergency department, while 158 are in wards elsewhere in the hospital.

The hospitals badly hit are University Hospital Limerick (60), Cork University Hospital (55), Letterkenny University Hospital (48) and Sligo University Hospital (45).

The government's record on outpatient waiting lists has been described as "abysmal", with new figures revealing a 323% increase in the number of people waiting more than 18 months for an outpatient appointment at University Hospital Galway – they're up from 1,184 in May 2016 to 5,008 at the end of January this year.

Govt Urged To Use Health Budget Increase To Tackle Waiting Lists
The government must use the health budget increases in the new Budget to do more to bring hospital waiting lists under control. Fianna Fáil TD for Mayo, Lisa Chambers, made the call as new figures released to her showed an increase in both inpatient and outpatient waiting lists at Mayo University Hospital.

Man Attacked In East Cork
Gardaí are appealing for information after a man in his 40s was attacked in east Cork on Tuesday. The victim was assaulted at Meat Shambles Lane in Youhal at around 3pm. He is currently being treated at Cork University Hospital, however his injures are not believed to be life-threatening. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact them.

Protection Of Life During Pregnancy Bill Published
The Protection of Life during Pregnancy Bill has been published by the government following approval by the Cabinet. Several significant changes have been made to the outline of the Bill, which was published in April. The Minister for Health will be given the power to stop suspended an institution if deemed to be operating the Act inappropriately.
