Talks In Place To Avert Nursing Strike
Nursing unions are meeting with the HSE and the Department of Health today, Tuesday 15 January, as efforts continue to prevent a series of strikes over pay and staff shortages.
Members of both the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) and the Psychiatric Nurses Association (PNA) have voted in favour of taking industrial action.
The unions insist that inadequate pay has caused the current recruitment and retention crisis and are seeking a rise of around 12%.
The INMO has planned for its 37,000 members to engage in six 24-hour strikes on 30 January as well as five dates in early February.
Meanwhile, the 6,000 members of the PNA will refuse to do overtime on Thursday 31 January as well as the 01, 05, 06, 07 February.
Further strike action will be taken in tandem between both organisations.
The provision of emergency cover in the event that the strikes go ahead will be discussed at the meeting.
Ahead of the negotiations, Health Minister Simon Harris highlighted the responsibilities that nurses have as part of the pubic sector pay agreement.
He said: "I think it's really important that everyone puts their shoulder to the wheel and tries to find a solution.
"Let's remember that in the case of the INMO they have signed up to a public sector pay agreement - they are a member of the Irish Congress of Trade Union and with public sector pay agreements comes benefits to your members, but also comes responsibilities of not causing industrial unrest."
