HSE Figures Reveal Shortage Of Paediatric Psychiatrists

The Health Service Executive has revealed that only half of all specialist paediatric psychiatry posts advertised in the last two years have been filled.

The roles remain unfilled due to various reasons, mainly a lack of appropriate qualifications or because candidates withdraw from the recruitment process or turn down the post.

29 jobs currently remain vacant for both child and adult psychiatrists across the country.

There are also 12 CAMHS teams (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service) in which an individual is working as a specialist child psychiatrist but isn't specifically trained in that area, despite being a qualified consultant psychiatrist.

According to the HSE, there are also other teams who don't have a specialist psychiatrist for children available at all.
