Firefighters Tackle Buncrana Blaze

A shop and ballroom have been destroyed in a fire in Buncrana, County Donegal.

Firefighters remain at the scene following the blaze which broke out on Sunday evening at Upper Main Street.

Several crews worked to control the incident during the night, which began in John Barr's drapery shop shortly after 9pm.

Both the business and the adjoining Plaza Ballroom are understood to have been destroyed.

No-one has been injured in the incident.

Donegal Fire Service rushed to the scene with four fire brigades, while two from Northern Ireland also attended.

Over 60 firefighters were tackling the blaze at one point.

The Northern Ireland Fire Service said working with their southern counterparts was a regular occurance.

"Because of the extent of the fire there was a need for a substantial resource from Northern Ireland," Group Commander William Johnston said.

"Obviously we are intent on life saving and helping our colleagues saving property also and that's why we sent such a large resource."

Part of the town centre remained closed on Monday morning.
